When looking to keep your energy up throughout the day, caffeine may seem like the go-to solution, but to ensure it lasts, it starts with what you fuel your body with.

We’ve heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” insinuating the nutritious power of an apple. However, while there isn’t a similar saying for potassium-rich foods, potassium may be the second key to keeping the doctor away.

Potassium doesn’t gain much attention as other proteins or vitamins, but it plays an important role in keeping the body balanced and ready to move. Whether you’re heading to a campus event, a meeting, or class and trying to stay focused, eating potassium-rich foods helps those nutrients move through your body and keep things running smoothly.

This essential mineral helps regulate the heartbeat, muscle function, and nerve function. It is an important player in keeping our body functioning efficiently. Potassium is also an electrolyte, helping conduct a positive electrical charge when dissolved in bodily fluids like blood and water.  Despite its importance, most of us do not get enough of it in our diet.

Because potassium is often overlooked and works quietly in the background, it is common not to realize you are lacking it. However, our bodies have a way of letting us know when we need to add more to our diet. Look out for signs of low energy, muscle cramps, or increased thirst. While these symptoms can have multiple causes, they are a reminder that what you eat directly impacts how you feel. Think about what you have eaten lately and assess whether the food had a high potassium content.

The good news is that getting more potassium isn’t a hard mineral to add to your day. It is about making small intentional choices with food that is already accessible. In fact, some of your favorite foods and meals in the dining hall may have already included potassium.

Some Potassium-rich options include:

Bananas, Sweet Potatoes, Avocados, Yogurt, and Leafy Greens.

While potassium may not be the most popular, it definitely has a significant impact on how our bodies function. The next time you are looking for an energy boost, check your plate. You may just need to add a potassium option.
